Crystal Shawanda was born in Ontario, Canada. She was raised and grew up in a Native American reservation called Wikwemikong, located in the Manitoulin Islands in Canada. Her childhood hero was Loretta Lynn. Crystal was a very talented young girl that she was able to write her first song at the age of 9. Her father worked as a truck driver and she used to accompany him on many of his trips. The truck route usually goes from Michigan to Nashville. Crystal was 11 when she first visited Nashville; where she watched singers and musicians performed through the window at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.
Crystal Shawanda’s very first album was made by her when she was 12 and sold copies just to pay for future trips to Nashville and pursue her career in music. She made her first performance at Tootsie’s when she was 13. A drummer who worked in Loretta Lynn’s band admired her performance and encouraged her to pursue her dreams. Her performance at Tootsie’s continued for some time until she decided to finally move to Nashville to concentrate on her music career. She signed to RCA Records in 2007 where she released her debut single, “You Can Let Go,” in January 2008 in Canada. The single was released in the United States on March 17, 2008.
